3. History of IoT

Brief History:

  • The term ‘Internet of Things’ was coined in 1999 by the computer scientist Kevin Ashton in the presentation he made while working at Procter & Gamble. 
  • Ashton proposed putting radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips on products to track them through a supply chain is essential to communicate between people and things and things themselves.
  • Wanting to bring Radio Frequency to the attention of P&G‘s senior management, Ashton called this presentation as ‘Internet of Things’ to incorporate the cool new trend of 1999 the internet.
  • Though Ashton mentioned it in 1999, the first appliance was a coke machine invented in the early 1980s at the Carnegie Melon University. A group of students from the university created a way to get their campus Coca-Cola vending machine to report on its contents through a network in order to save them the trek if the machine was out of Coke. They installed micro-switches into the machine to report on how many Coke cans were available and if they were cold.
  • In 1990, John Romkey connected a toaster to the internet for the first time. 
  • A year later, a group of students at the University of Cambridge used a web camera to report on coffee. They came up with the idea to use the first web camera prototype to monitor the amount of coffee available in their computer labs coffee pot. 
  • They did this by programming the web camera to take photos three times a minute of the coffee pot. The photos were then sent to local computers so everyone could see if there was coffee available.

Before going into the details of LED (Light Emitting Diode), let us understand electrical transducers and diode.  Electrical Transducer: An electronic device that converts energy from one form to another is called transducer. This process is called transduction. An input transducer takes in physical energy and converts it into an electrical energy. Example: Microphone Takes in physical sound waves and converts into an electrical signal that can be transferred through wires. An output transducer or an actuator takes in electrical signal and converts them into other forms of energy. 1. What is 'Internet of Things'?

Description: Internet of things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals, people that are provided with Unique Identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over the internet without requiring human-to-human (or) human-to-computer interactions.
